Garage doors in Glen Cove, house by house
Before it was Glen Cove, this place was Musketa Cove, settled in 1668. The name changed in 1834 and it became a city in 1918. Walk around and you'll spot a garage from just about every one of those chapters.
Over in the Orchard and down by the Landing, garages tend to be small, tucked behind the house, and every so often still wearing their first wooden door. Head toward Dosoris Lane and the big Gold Coast properties and you're into oversized carriage doors, three-bay garages and solid wood that needs serious muscle in the springs. Downtown on Glen Street and School Street it's mostly shop gates out front and roll-up doors out back.
And then there's the harbor. Anywhere near Crescent Beach, Morgan Park or Garvies Point, salty air drifts in off Hempstead Harbor and the Sound pretty much daily. It chews through springs, cables and the brackets at the bottom of the door quicker than folks expect, so for houses near the shore we lean toward coated or galvanized replacement parts.
My spring snapped. Can I still use the opener to get the car out?
Please don't. With the spring gone, that little motor is trying to haul the whole door up by itself, and a double steel door can easily weigh 200 pounds. That's how gears get chewed up and cables pop. Leave the car parked, give us a call, and we'll get it free safely.
